The clock strikes midnight and I'm wide awake;
sleep is nowhere on the horizon.
The clock strikes one and my eyes are still stapled open;
refusing to give into a single blink.
The clock strikes two and I can't turn off my dizzying mind;
which keeps my thoughts racing in circles.
The clock strikes three and I know this night will be long;
I've all but given into defeat.
The clock strikes four and I coldly wait for it to strike five;
knowing I've already lost the battle.
The clock strikes five and all there is to do is wait until sunrise;
at least I'll witness one of nature's majesties.
The clock strikes six, my mind has won out over my body;
I'm still awake,
my body aches,
the battle of sleep
was lost today.
