Hand Drawn Pictures

You saved hand drawn pictures from when I was three
The age I was when you left me
Was it a ememory
Of all the things that would never be

Was it a way to preserve the past
Keep the reverie behind a pane of glass
A capsule in time to forever last
Or is that notion wistful, crass

You never showed love for my brother and I
Not even cancer could soften your pride
It spread quickly, while you spread lies
Words that keep cutting long after you died

Did these pictures hold meaning, why speculate
An answer lost in time—to fate
If you did love us, we found out too late
A “relationship”… bruised by hate

If we were important, why not just say
Your actions never spoke that way
Why keep it a secret: locked away
You knew we would find out one day

When you died, we’d sift through your things
Photos, jewelry, even your wedding ring
But filed away under your mattress springs
These pictures lived lonely, no air to sing

Why, oh why, I keep asking why
Why do I care, all you did was deride
Kept me waiting, forever an aside
An inconvenience in your life

Now years have gone by, And I still don’t know
A question which tears a hole through my soul
Was there ever love, did you watch us grow
These thoughts: just kindling for a night lit low
I burned the drawings; they went up in smoke
