Christmas 2015

by ·

12/20/2019
snow falls on a winter day, light
the fire crackles and burns
safe and warm and out of sight
we submit to worldly yearns

outside, children laugh and play
you, wrapped in my arms
as we prepare for Christmas day
sirens about to alarm

the evening comes to a joyous close
everyone tucked away tight
low and behold, what few could know
it will be a sleepless night

what wonderment tomorrow will bring
a day for all to rejoice
then five a.m. the telephone rings
with urgency in his voice

we pack a bag and hit the road quick
race to get to your side
should be no surprise, we knew you were sick
can we make it before you die?

we drive all day, drive all night
updates all the way
we know at the end, you'll lose this fight
let me make it, I pray

then 5:23, comes the evening call
to deliver the irrevocable news
still hours away, my mind stalls
void of emotion to lose

over the years, you caused such pain
a mother, to me, you were not
now, there is no one left to blame
with you, died the forgiveness I sought

in spite of it all, I still love you
I've learned to live with regret
I'll never know if you loved me too
a Christmas not to forget
