It starts out small, slow, subtle
You know it’s there but think nothing of it
An itch to be scratched but your hands are full
A noticeable nag, perhaps it will pass, ignore it ‘til it’s gone
But it doesn’t leave, it builds and builds
Incessant, it festers until it’s too much to bear
You drop everything with a mighty crash
Free your hands to attack this parasite
That infects your mind, body, and soul
Rummaging through drawers to find the perfect tool
To carve out the blight which screams, begs to be freed
Bigger than your will, you will succumb to its power
Now permanently scarred by the damage it has inflicted
Maybe you shouldn’t have ignored it in the first place
But... you let it multiply until it grew out of control
An Innocent Itch
