Passing Ships

by ·

11/7/2017
We pass like ships in the night:
silently saluting our brothers
as we swiftly sway to and fro,
cutting through the water,
surrendering to the salty sea.

A once-dim light in the distance
is now a roaring fire beside me
but will soon drift away just as
suddenly as it came upon me.

For as we pass in the still night,
we share a solitary handshake,
acknowledging the solidarity
of the lone seaman who chooses
this life of wander and mystery.

And as the fire turns into
a pinprick in the blackness,
so, too, shall the memory
of this passing fade until
I am alone, once again,
with my ship and the sea.
