let the pain in then let it go
feel it so you know it's real
then send it on its way
it's had it's day
and that day
is not today
you need to know what pain is
and is not
or the next time you're fraught
with fear
from the screams you hear
as danger nears
you won't know to flee or fight
be scared of the night
or steer toward the light
you must know pain
to see any gain
know it well
as it takes you through hell
and back again
to where you first met
under the starry sky
where he told his first lie
that you wouldn't get wet
that he would protect
you from the coming storm
but you adored him
and now you mourn
under this mantle of scorn
which he once borne
but gifts to the meek
when he sees they are weak
no he doesn't delay
when he spots his prey
he takes away
your light of day
and now he's here to stay
now release the pain
or it will make you insane
you know it's real
get rid of it before it steals
away every last ounce of sanity
from your brain
don't let it distract
or retract
from what you know inside
that makes you feel alive
where joy and happiness reside
stand tall
because it's only pain after all
