Just a Child

by ·

12/5/2017
I was just a child
A helpless three-year-old
Watching Mom and Dad fight

At the top of the stairs
Too innocent to be scared
Watching all through the night

No love was shown
No hugs were shared
An example you present

I wonder where
When it's clear as day
I learned how to resent

I look back
With a tearful eye
Now that I am grown

All the baggage
Which tagged along
The hurt I cannot own

The pain I hold
Is held so deep
Hidden from the day

All these years
All I've shown
Happiness portrayed

The sad truth is
This lifelong angst
Has always walked by my side

I didn't notice
I refused to see
Because I never looked inside

But now that you're here
I'm forced to face
The damaged ghosts of my past

Unbearable memories
Those I've suppressed
Have come to haunt me at last
