Counting Sheep

Counting sheep
Begging for sleep
The moon stares into my soul

I stare back
For what I lack
Will one day take its toll

Wide awake
I thirst, I slake
For what will never unfold

I cry, you lie
I desperately try
To grip what dreams have sold

A final attempt
Before me contempt
Served up bitter and cold

Hungry, I wait
To never sate
The moon ruthlessly scolds

Weary, I’ll be
Look and you’ll see
A man: about to implode

When will it end
Bruised and bent
Ego unable to hold

The pain inside
The moon derides
Leaving me broken, unwhole

Maybe one day
I’ll listen, you’ll say
What I long to be told

Our eyes stay locked
Absence of shock
You mockingly glimmer and glow

You’ll never give in
I’ll never win
Mercy, you refuse to show
Solace, I shall not know
