Concrete Thoughts

by ·

4/7/2024
Heavy words dump onto the page
with meaning and direction yet to be determined
they pour out like loose cement
without rebar to support any structure
form takes the shape of the vessel it's in
I crave substance, permanence, resonance
but all I get is unevenness
with some kid's handprint and initials
before it had a chance to set

This poem is a joke, but not in the traditional sense
no one is laughing
I may be the only one who knows what 'concrete thoughts' feel like
stuck, immovable, weighing me down
yet I'm reluctant to take a sledgehammer
and break up the slabs to create space for something new
I'm afraid to demolish what's already there...
