Beneath the Ground

by ·

9/12/2017
Cover my nose and my mouth.
The smoke-filled air portends
          the end.
Breathe in slowly, deliberately;
Fill my lungs with thickening regret
So dense I can drink it down.

Protect me from suffering,
From being buried under a veil
          of soot.
Idly watch as I clamber
And claw at the new-fallen ground
That descends upon me.

Encased in my living tomb,
There is no escaping
          this hell.
I hear footsteps all around,
But not a soul searches for those
Living beneath the ground.
