Attention is a Firefly

by ·

12/27/2016
Attention is a firefly: so magical, so beautiful, but so hard to capture.
They flicker all around, each a new opportunity:
drawing attention to each luminous flash of possibility.
In your hands, the firefly is the ultimate beacon of uncertain hope;
knowing—fearing—she may have escaped your grasp.
But still, all attention is given to the long anticipated reveal,
desperately hoping your efforts were not in vain.
And once you hold her in your hands, you don't want to let her go.

Preserve her in a jar. All attention shifts focus, but just for a brief instant.

When they have had their fill, you are stuck with a jar full of fireflies—captive—ignored.

The momentary pity you give is all the attention she will receive, until she ceases to be;

until her light forever fades away.
